what's happening at Evoke?
"Promise(d)" by STHESIA

April 26th - 6-10P
Evoke Gallery welcomes Teddy Sandler (STHESIA) as our first guest Curator. Taking on the opportunity to transform from our walls, Teddy proudly brings to you, “Promise(d)”.
(In her own words) “The exhibition combines a revisionist history and speculative storytelling to recontextualize what being alive in America could mean. At a time when capitalism has killed radical change and futures that look different from now, this exhibition encourages audience members and artists to take a leap of faith, together. Instead of a sense of doom, I hope the curation in this exhibit will allow a space for a reorientation to the present, through awakening sensory memory and providing speculative touchstones for solidarity during the current cultural revolution.
Thematically, all the works are tied around an exploration of what is lost and promised in the current moment. Artists address this across painting, sculpture, and activated performances, providing an attempt to speculate, meditate, and materially reorient towards the future. With attention to the freedom of this coming era, climactically, politically, and economically, the exhibition hopes to cry that simply put; the future is now. I plan to arrange these works and program related events to instill viewers with a sense of control during times that have consistently been called unprecedented, letting surrealist and subjective realities in a present America represented in the art flow into solidarity.”

"Show & Tell" by Write That Down

April 26th - 7-10P
Write that Down is back with a special edition of their Show & Tell series in tandem with Promise(d), the first exhibition curated by Teddy Sandler (@sandler.tdy) at Evoke Gallery (@evokegallerychicago). This group show explores destiny and manifests a collective dream through visualizations of growth in times of decay.
WTD!’s Show & Tell series is possible through their partnership with Chicago’s Guild Literary Complex (@guild.literary.complex). Come by and SHOW a keepsake that’s dear to you, a favorite bit of junk, or a cute knick knack. TELL a story about your artifact and its meaning or some speculative fiction you’ve been working on. The evening will begin with an open mic and archiving session, followed by a presentation from a past (and/or future) mag contributor.
Attendees are encouraged to bring ephemera and memorabilia that they would like scanned/archived for inclusion in the magazine’s upcoming issue.
Evoke Represented Artists
Evoke Gallery proudly represents artists whose work continues to expand: in scale, in audience, and in presence. We remain invested as each body of work deepens, enters new conversations, and finds its way into lasting collections. Their individual pages offer a closer look at the ideas, materials, and momentum shaping each body of work.

October Sharify
Painter
October Sharify is a 26-year-old oil painter based in Chicago, Illinois. Their longtime interest in history and theology blends in their work with feminine aesthetics and spiritual imagery. October has a developmental disability and believes that this is both a detriment to their work and integral to their process.

Brooke Raven
Painter
Brooke Raven is a central Illinois native, Chicago-based painter. Raven carries a residual fascination with small town social dynamics from her formative years into adulthood. The small towns of the rural midwest, while they have their fleeting moments of charm and appeal, also house a sour perpetual stew of conservative values, chronic gossipers, and substance abuse.

Vigo Vargas
Multimedia
Vigo Vargas is a first generation Venezuelan American. A self-taught multi-faceted Director and Photographer, with a diverse background in Comedy and live performance. Born in Miami, FL and raised by Venezuelan Italian parents, his international upbringing naturally drives him toward creating compelling, human driven, high-end narratives within his projects.
